Beyond the bustling atmosphere of traditional counterparty trading in Dounan, a "quiet" trading method is reshaping the trading landscape of China's flower industry with the power of technology and rules. On December 20, 2002, the Kunming International Flower Auction and Trading Center, the first market in China centered on auction transactions, was completed in Dounan, marking the beginning of a new era of open and transparent competitive bidding for flowers in China.

Stepping into the vast auction hall, over 900 trading seats are fully occupied, like precisely rotating gears. On the electronic screen, the price data of over 40 categories and more than 1,500 kinds of fresh-cut flowers, including roses, lilies and bellflowers, are being refreshed in real time. Purchasers from all over the country stared intently at the screen and, relying on their acute judgment of quality and price, completed the bidding decisions within milliseconds. After the auction hammer fell, the packers immediately started the assembly line operation. Cold chain trucks fully loaded with flowers set off for markets across the country and even overseas overnight, spreading the fragrance of Yunnan to all corners of the world.

 Flowers waiting for a good price

This auction transaction model originated from the mature experience of the Dutch flower industry. Li Qing from the Dounan Flower Industry Comprehensive Service Center introduced, "In the early days, the flower market in Yunnan mainly relied on counterparty transactions. Issues such as opaque prices and low transaction efficiency restricted the development of the industry." Under the government's leadership, relevant personnel traveled to the Netherlands for study and investigation. Eventually, this advanced system was introduced and the Kunming Flower Auction Center was established.

After more than 20 years of in-depth development, Kunming Flower Auction Center has grown into the "digital hub" of Asian flower trading. In 2024, the average daily transaction volume of fresh cut flowers here reached as high as 7.06 million, with each transaction taking only an astonishing 4 seconds and a transaction rate of 95%. The trading platform built on Internet technology not only covers large, medium and small cities across the country, but also exports over 500 varieties of fresh cut flowers such as roses, gerberas and baby's eyes to dozens of countries and regions including Thailand, Japan and Russia, truly achieving "trade connecting five continents and blooming all over the world".

Its price-reducing auction mechanism enables prices to be naturally formed in an open and transparent environment. Coupled with the immediate settlement of funds, it greatly enhances transaction efficiency and credibility. What is more worthy of attention is that the flower auction center has established a standardized flower assessment system, from grading standards to post-harvest treatment, setting a quality benchmark for the entire industry and forcing flower farmers to transform from extensive planting to refined management.

Nowadays, with the improvement of six major service systems including e-commerce, remote trading, modern warehousing and cold chain logistics, the Kunming Flower Auction Center has developed from a simple trading venue into a full industrial chain hub integrating trading, services, finance and information. It is not only a first-class flower trading platform in Asia, but also an important engine for promoting the internationalization and standardization of China's flower industry.
